because you trembled

that day

i left my ring in his mailbox

You loaded my things in the van

soaked in optimism we struck the border with our fists

washington in our rearview

You clutched my hand in sleep

gasped for air like you had finally reached the surface

we found a humid laughter to fight our tragedies on the road

i stumbled through murky descriptions of the beer-sweat smell on that faded august morning

tales of afghanistan poured out of you

discrete dust secreted in your crevices

i watched You once mid shower

Your choices sliding across Your hands

You replayed the decisions You made whenever the sirens poured

in over the water

whether to squat in that slimy stall or stand unapologetic and naked

waiting for an end to the artillery fire

montana and our first fight

You saw violence in my fatigue

i saw rage in yours

i ran looked to the grey night to the clay to the black river

until You pulled me back to bed

and we went on

Our euphoria waned somewhere before nebraska

we invaded kentucky because we could

set our sodden feet down and danced

as locals stopped to ask if we needed help

we tried to douse our abandon

pretended no one was listening through tentative touch

let big brother come for us

we are certainly coming for him

mt rushmore lit our way

all eyes clammy with sleep

still Your triple heartbeat whipped us forward to atlanta

tennessee and the final surge

headlights slippery across Your determined face

i started to fear i would have to escape You too

only eroded rivers change their course

finding conversion where the ground is soft

for rivers too can run away

Love Letters to Texas (1)

let me be your miracle

-for you are mine

you may be the rain

-but i am the storm

you may be the hurricane

-but i am the sky

you may be the beast

-but i am the breast

and i will be the music that feeds you

oh yes

i will be the music that feeds you

For wasn’t it Adam who was pricked and punctured,
probed and penetrated,
bled
for the life he carried inside him?

“Oh my cherished heart”,
My Beloved One whispers.
The miles stretch me taught.

Trace me with both hands.
Feel my form beyond my frame:
My light, my shadow.

I now know how a fish feels

Flapping on the wooden deck,

Sunlight-slicked and gasping.

You hooked me in and drew me to air.

So much oxygen, I’m drowning in-

battleground

I am afflicted
You cannot see, cannot hear
Shall I then bleed out?
